History

The Fort Pierce Housing Authority has been providing affordable housing to low-income families in Fort Pierce, Florida since its inception in 1959.

1937

The United States Housing Act of 1937 sets public housing policy. It is the first federal legislation dealing directly with housing for low-income and disadvantaged people.

1959

The Fort Pierce Housing Authority is established.

1974

Congress passes the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 to create the Section 8 Program.

1976

HUD institutes Performance Funding Subsidy with operating subsidies for federal development based on performance of local authority.

1981

Housing and Community Development Act of 1981 establishes new rent levels of 30 percent of resident’s income for public housing.

2007

The Section 8 Voucher Reform Act (SEVRA), was introduced in the House of Representatives to reform Section 8 of the United States Housing Act of 1937.
